Natural Oxytocin, Anxiety and Depression

The Outcome? We become oxytocin deficient. Oxytocin is the anti-stress hormone. Without this calming hormone to dampen the stress pouring from our overwhelmed amygdalas, we become conditioned for anxiety and depression.

The answer? We need more oxytocin and less stress. We need relationship. We need contact and connection with others. In short, our world needs healing! We have lost our way. In our push, push, hyper-connected, instantaneous world we have lost the meaning of relationship, self-awareness, love, and understanding.

What we’ve also lost is the impact of stress on our body-mind systems. Stress which is prolonged, uninterrupted, or overwhelming becomes trauma. Stress and trauma suppress the oxytocin system. A suppressed oxytocin system can lead to prolonged anxiety and depression. But guess what? None of the the anti-anxiety and anti-depression meds are even addressing this issue. None of them speak to suppressed oxytocin.

If you are one of the many adults in America that suffer from anxiety and depression I want to encourage you to not give up. There is hope. Begin by getting really honest with the stressors currently in your life. Do a thorough assessment how what’s bringing you joy and what’s bringing you pain. Then clean house! You can’t live a life completely absent of stress or pain, but you can have a lot more joy and a lot less pain than you are currently experiencing.

Pay close attention to your past history and how many of those experiences continue to show up in your life today. Were you abused? Have you now found yourself in an abusive relationship? It’s a unconscious replay. You are re-acting what you have already experienced. You can change it, you really can. Are you a parent feeling helpless with your child, causing you to feel anxious or depressed? Have you ever considered how much your child’s behavior reminds of you of a time before when you felt helpless, at risk, or out of control? It happens more times than you may realize.

Whatever your situation may be you can take charge of it. In truth, it is only a different choice. It feels like a hard choice because it is based in so many ingrained negative and stressful patterns, but still yet it is only a choice. One you can make. Make a different choice today. Instead of worrying in this moment, close your eyes and take ten deep breaths. Feel the ease. Don’t stop here though, now put on your favorite song and think about a person that you love. Now you are making a choice if only for a moment. You have much more power than you think. Now say, “I feel love love love”. Say it again. It’s a choice, but remember you have become conditioned for the anxiety or depression so it’s not going to last. You don’t change negative conditioning in a single moment. It’s a process. However, that feeling of calm and ease…that’s oxytocin.
